Carbohydrates are often treated as optional or even harmful in casual fitness conversation, but they remain the body’s most readily used fuel source, especially for higher-intensity activity.
Why they matter for training
Glycogen — stored carbohydrate in muscles and the liver — is the primary fuel for moderate-to-high intensity exercise. Chronically low carbohydrate intake can noticeably reduce training performance and energy for demanding sessions.
Quality still matters
Whole sources — oats, rice, fruit, potatoes, legumes — provide fibre and micronutrients alongside the energy, generally producing steadier blood sugar than heavily refined versions.
There’s no single right amount
Needs vary widely based on activity level, body size, and goals. Rather than eliminating carbohydrates outright, matching intake to actual activity level tends to work better for most active people.
