Mobility Work: Why It’s Not Just for Older Adults

Mobility training is often framed as something to worry about later in life, but restricted range of motion shows up early — especially in people who sit for long stretches of the day.

What mobility actually means

It’s the ability to move a joint through its full range with control, not just flexibility. Someone can be flexible in a passive stretch and still lack the strength to control that same range under load.

Where it matters most

Hips and shoulders are common trouble spots for people who sit often, directly affecting squat depth, overhead reaching, and general day-to-day comfort.

A low-effort way to start

Five to ten minutes of targeted mobility work a few times a week — hip openers, shoulder rotations, ankle circles — is enough to notice a difference within a few weeks.
