How to Set Fitness Goals That Actually Stick

Vague goals like ‘get fit’ or ‘lose weight’ rarely survive contact with a busy week, mostly because they don’t specify what action to actually take today.

Make it about behaviour, not outcome

‘Walk three times this week’ is a goal you can control directly. ‘Lose five pounds’ depends on many factors outside daily control and offers no clear next action.

Set a realistic timeframe

Short-term goals (a week or two) build momentum faster than distant ones, and can be adjusted quickly if life gets in the way — reducing the chance of one bad week derailing everything.

Review and adjust, don’t abandon

If a goal turns out to be unrealistic, scaling it down is different from quitting. Adjusting the target while keeping the habit alive is usually the difference between long-term success and a familiar January-to-February pattern.
