How Stress Affects Your Body Beyond Just Your Mood

Stress is usually discussed as a mental or emotional issue, but its physical effects on training and recovery are just as real, even if less visible.

The hormonal side

Chronically elevated cortisol from ongoing stress can interfere with sleep quality, increase appetite for high-calorie foods, and slow muscle recovery — all of which work against fitness goals regardless of how well training itself is going.

Why ‘just push through’ backfires

Training is itself a physical stressor. Adding hard workouts on top of an already high-stress period, without adjusting intensity, can extend recovery time rather than build fitness.

Simple counterbalances

Short walks, breathing exercises, and protecting sleep during high-stress weeks won’t remove the stress, but they reduce how much it compounds with training fatigue.
