Breathing is automatic, which is exactly why it’s easy to overlook as a tool — but controlling it deliberately affects both workout performance and everyday stress levels.
During lifting
Bracing the core with a controlled exhale on the hardest part of a lift (the ‘sticking point’) improves stability and is a safer default than holding the breath entirely through heavy sets.
Before a stressful moment
Slow, extended exhales — longer than the inhale — activate the body’s calming response and can measurably lower heart rate within a couple of minutes.
A simple pattern to try
Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six. A few rounds before a workout or a stressful meeting is enough to notice a difference.
