Understanding DOMS: Why Your Muscles Hurt Two Days Later

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness — the ache that peaks 24 to 48 hours after a workout — is a normal response to unfamiliar or harder-than-usual effort, not necessarily a sign of a good workout.

What’s actually happening

Microscopic damage to muscle fibres triggers an inflammatory repair response, which is what produces the soreness. It’s part of adaptation, but more soreness doesn’t automatically mean more progress.

When it’s a bad sign

Sharp, localised pain (as opposed to general achiness), sudden severe soreness after a normal session, or pain that worsens rather than improves after a few days can indicate injury rather than typical DOMS.

What actually helps

Light movement, adequate sleep, and staying hydrated tend to ease DOMS faster than complete rest. Chasing soreness as a goal usually just leads to overtraining.
