The Truth About ‘Spot Reduction’ and Belly Fat

Targeting fat loss in one specific area through exercises aimed at that spot — endless crunches for belly fat, for example — is one of the most persistent myths in fitness.

Why it doesn’t work that way

Fat loss happens across the whole body based on overall energy balance, genetics, and hormones — not based on which muscle is being worked. Ab exercises build ab muscles; they don’t selectively burn fat over them.

What actually reduces belly fat over time

A sustainable calorie deficit, combined with strength training to preserve muscle and adequate sleep to manage stress hormones, is the closest thing to a real answer — and it isn’t area-specific.

Where core training still helps

Strengthening the core supports posture, lifting mechanics, and injury prevention. It’s worth doing — just not as a fat-loss shortcut for one area.
