Beginner’s Guide to Strength Training Without a Coach

Starting strength training alone can feel intimidating, but most beginners overcomplicate it. A small set of compound movements, done consistently, covers most of what’s needed in the first year.

Pick a handful of core lifts

Squats, hinges (like deadlifts or hip thrusts), pushes (like presses), and pulls (like rows) form a solid foundation. You don’t need a dozen exercises — you need a few done well and often.

Learn form before load

Start lighter than feels necessary and focus on controlled movement through a full range of motion. Filming your own sets from the side is a free, effective way to self-check form.

Progress slowly and track it

Two to three sessions a week, adding small amounts of weight or reps over time, is enough to see real change in the first few months. Consistency beats intensity, especially early on.
